EDUCATION VICE PRESIDENT
Position Title: Education Vice President
Indicative Time Commitment: 20-25hrs per week
Reports To: Board of Management
Length of Office: 1st November to 31st October
Position Overview: As prescribed by the Rules of Association, the Education Vice-President is duly elected by the students of the Monash University Gippsland Campus and is charged with the broad responsibility of coordinating representation strategies, student representatives and actions as determined by the Education Committee and Board of Management. The Education Vice-President shall also have the responsibility of representing and promoting the activities of the portfolio on behalf of students at all levels within the University, Campus and where appropriate in the wider community. The Education Vice-President shall preside over the Education Committee. The President is the official spokesperson on behalf of the Student Union.
The Education Vice-President shall assume the role of President in his/her absence.
It is recognised that this position is a voluntary position. However, incumbents are obliged to fulfill their roles and responsibilities in line with the expectations of the Board.
Position Duties and Responsibilities:
The Education Vice President is accountable to the Union Board and to the membership of MUGSU. He/she will act in the best interests of MUGSU and in accordance with this responsibility will perform the following functions.
- To be available to discuss with students their enquiries and problems
- To attend Union development and training events as required
- To uphold and promote the mission and vision statements of the Student Union to constituents, the University and the community
- Represent and promote the Student Union to its constituents, the University and the community
- To take direction from the Board
- Be aware of and to implement Board policy, procedure and guidelines
- Lead the annual review of the Student Union strategic plan and the implementation of the strategic plan
- To assist when required and available in the day-to-day operations of the Union office
- To be aware of the fiduciary responsibility
- To be aware of delegated responsibility
- To be aware of responsibilities prescribed by the Rules of Association or under the law
- To ensure that a monthly report detailing the activities of the Education Vice President and Education Committee is received by the Board of Management
- To declare any conflict of interest
- To be active in the development and monitoring of MUGSU governance structures
- Ensure that the incoming Education Vice President is fully briefed and that all records including the policy folder are kept current to facilitate a smooth transition
Essential Duties:
- To act as Chair of all Board Meetings, Executive Committee and Annual General Meetings in the absence of the President
- When chairing such meetings to ensure that all meetings are conducted in a proper and orderly manner
- To Chair all Education Committee meetings
- To attend all Union Board of Management and Executive Committee meetings
- To attend Gippsland Campus Service Council meetings
- To attend Gippsland Academic Development Forum, Academic Board and Education Committee of Academic Board meetings
- To liaise with the Student Advocate and Support Coordinator on matters related to Education Committee and relevant Campus and University committee meetings
- To act as the official spokesperson in the absence of the President
- To be involved in the preparation and dissemination of media releases, articles and reports for submission to publications as and when required
- To liaise with the Heads of School or Faculties of the Campus and University
- In conjunction with the Student Advocate and Support Coordinator to ensure Board members make themselves available to participate in Academic Progress Committees
- To be available as a signatory on MUGSU accounts and documents
- In conjunction with the Student Advocate and Support Coordinator research and remain aware of issues relevant to education on local, state and national levels
- In conjunction with the Student Advocate and Support Coordinator, coordinate, organise and assist with the implementation of representation strategies and in lobbying and advocating issues on behalf of constituents
- To ensure that a monthly report detailing the activities of the Education Vice President and Education Committee is received by the Board of Management
Preferred Duties:
- To attend GTLC Meetings
- To attend all other meetings as required
- To interact informally with Union constituents
- To interact with the wider community on issues relating to education
- Liaise with the Executive Officer and the President on matters to be raised in a public forum
- To communicate with constituents, the University and the wider community on education and education-related matters
- To establish a Student Committee for each School or Faculty
- To ensure that all students are aware of who their Student Advocate and Support Coordinator is and what the role entails
- Liaise with the Student Advocate and Support Coordinator on local, state and national educational issues
- To have an awareness of student rights and responsibilities and the function of the University’s Academic Board and Education Committee
- To act as a sounding board for Board members offering advice and support in the fulfillment of their duties
- To update and maintain relevant information space(s)
- To maintain contact with organisations and institutions with similar backgrounds and educational concerns
