ANIMAL OF THE MONTH
Over the year MUGSU will be having an Animal of the Month to raise awareness and funds to help save endangered animals,  Donations received will go towards adopting the months animal through the World Wildlife Funds adopt-an-animal program. Any excess money will be donated to the WWF at the end of the year.
There will also be some limited edition I HEART Badges available for a $2.00+ Donation.

DVDs
I recently received a number of DVDs about the Wilderness Societies 'Forests for Climate, Water Health' campaign, although filmed in 2005 they are unfortunately still relevant as more and more catchment forest is earmarked for logging. Its a short 20 minute film that shows the impact of logging in and around the water catchment.
I have five copies available for loan so please drop by and pick up a copy.

FIRST ANIMAL OF THE MONTH - MARCH

Humpback Whale

Image

Unfortunately one of the Summer Traditions is the fight against Whaling.
During March MUGSU will be having a 'whale of a time' raising awareness of these amazing creatures through documentaries, films and activities, while raising money to adopt a Humpback Whale.

Despite there being a moratorium in place against commercial whaling for nearly 20 years. Over 1200 whales have been hunted each year since commercial whaling was banned in 1986. Whaling is taking place right now and increasing yearly. Norway continues to hunt whales under its objection to the IWC moratorium against commercial whaling. Japan has been whaling under the guise of 'scientific research', killing hundreds of whales each year and selling whale meat openly on the market. Iceland has also submitted a formal objection to the IWC moratorium against commercial whaling. Although claiming it would not undertake commercial whaling before 2006, Iceland has begun its own 'scientific whaling' program.

At the start of Summer Japan was set to increase its 'scientific whaling' operations in the Southern Hemisphere and to include the hunting of humpback and fin whales. However thankfully the decision was overturned for the year.

Male Humpbacks are the noisiest and most imaginative whales when it comes to songs. They have long, varied, complex, eerie, and beautiful songs

Quick Tips - How to Save the World from Home

+ Only Turn on 3 Things at a time - computer, stereo, tv, dvd, vcr, set-top box, coffee machine, light, air conditioner, fan - you'd have to be an octopus to use all of them at once!
+ Hands off the cold water tap! - instead turn down the hot tap
+ Leave the lights off, when you don't need them
+ Try to buy products with glass containers rather then plastic
+ Leave the Paper Towel and Hand Dryer Alone, it takes 30 seconds for your hands to dry by themselves anyway
+ Pay Less, Save More - Op Shop, Reuse or Refilling saves money and avoids excess waste and rubbish
+ Buy Recycled Paper - 100% Recycled is now available in a number of stores, and go for the recycled toilet paper too - its cheaper too!
+ Buy 2 in 1 Shampoo - does the same job with half time and waste
+ Think Small - The smaller the machine the more efficacy for the most part. use the microwave instead of the oven, or a laptop instead of a desktop computer

“If you think you are too small to make a difference – try sleeping with a Mosquito” - Dalai Lama
