Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from Off Campus students...

What if I feel an assignment mark is unjustified?
Contact your unit advisor to discuss the assignment. They will either refer to on if an external marker is involved or give you feedback on how the assignment addressed various criteria. If you are not satisfied with their explanation and feel you have been unfairly graded you can request a review or a remark. A review means another academic will go over the original marked assignment and either concur or not with the grade given. A remark means a clean copy of the assignment will be marked by another academic; this second grade will replace the first even if it is lower. For assistance in getting your assignment remarked contact the Union on 1800 816 620.

How do I get access to my exam paper?
You can request a copy of your exam answers from the faculty. Details of how to contact your faculty should be included in your unit material. There may be a fee of $5 involved to cover photocopying charges and postage. Exam answers are held for 6 months then destroyed.
Where can I get a copy of the MUGSU bursary form?
Application forms for the 2008 Off Campus Equity bursaries are available online. Go to the MUGSU website homepage for a link to the application forms, or call Sarah Elston on (03) 5122 7198 if you have any questions.
Why are not all past exam papers on the library’s exams database?
It is up to the academic whether past exam papers will be available or not for display in this database. Oftentimes if a paper is not available this is because the same or similar exam questions have been recycled from year to year.
Can anyone help me with questions related to the content of my unit?
Yes, your unit advisor is the person to contact. Their particulars should be in your unit material or you could contact your faculty office. The unit advisor is able to assist with clarification of topics, questions about assignments and organisational matters such as extensions or recommending additional readings. If you cannot contact your unit advisor, perhaps you’ve made multiple unanswered calls or emails, get in touch with the Student Support Unit on 1800 332 569 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Alternatively you can contact your faculty and ask for a message to be left. If all else fail contact the Union on 1800 816 620.
How do I get in contact with other off campus students in my units?
There may be a network list in your unit. Students have an option on their enrolment form to become involved in network lists. The email and/or phone number of students who opt into the network list will be circulated amongst the participants. If you did not select to be involved in network lists on your enrolment form you cannot change your preference. There is no facility to include students on lists after their enrolment has been completed. Units using WebCT may have discussion forums where you can chat to other students from the class. There is an Off Campus chat forum on this MUGSU site for all students to use; and the Off Campus Buddy Program is a great way to chat to other students also!!
Who do I talk to about selecting units for my study program?
You should talk to a Student Advisor. You can find out who the Student Advisor is by contacting your faculty. It is a good idea to start mapping out your course plan from early on and adjusting if necessary as you go. There’s no going back if you study the wrong unit or don’t study the right unit and you could waste a lot of time and money through not having a clear idea of your requirements. You may not be prompted to seek the advice of a Student Advisor, it is up to you to make contact but you should do this early on.
Is there childcare available at Weekend Schools?

There is notionally childcare available at Weekend Schools at the Gippsland campus. The requirement is that 6 bookings are required before we open the childcare centre, Pooh Corner. The last time we received 6 + bookings was in 2000 so we haven’t operated this service for some time. If family or friends are unable to assist you, see Childcare in the A – Z guide for information about the family day care program. Remember Monash policy says you can bring your child to class with you although you should make a request to the lecturer and respect the needs of other students also.

How do I get a replacement student card?
You can download an application for a replacement student card from the Monash website (a search will bring up the downloadable form) or contact the Student Services Centre on +61 3 9902 6287. Notify the library of the loss also as someone could borrow books using your card otherwise. How do I change my address with Monash?
You can update your details online via the Web Enrolment System my.monash.edu.au/wes or complete a variation to personal details form which can be obtained from the Student Services Centre. To obtain a form contact Student Services on +61 3 9902 6287. If you change address during semester, update your details immediately and redirect your mail for at least a month. Important information may be been sent out to you prior to you changing your address and you won’t even know that you were meant to receive anything.
I received an early warning letter from Monash, am I going to be excluded?
The early warning system means that students who are at risk of being called before the faculty Academic Progress Committee (APC) are sent a letter alerting them to that fact. All faculties now have the same policy for course progression: academic progress will be considered unsatisfactory if a student fails more than 50% of enrolled credit points in a year, has failed the same compulsory unit twice or fails to meet the requirements of a conditions previously set by the APC. Students in any of these criteria will be sent a 'show cause' letter following publication of semester results. You have an opportunity to provide evidence in written form and by appearing before the APC (via telelink) and can approach the Union for assistance or support when preparing your defence on 1800 816 620. Off campus students may find themselves faced with the APC through failing only one or two subjects due to the reduced work load being undertaken. How do I contact other off campus students in my state or territory?
Contact your Off Campus Students’ Association representative. A student representative is appointed for each state or territory and there are two overseas positions. Your student representative is a great contact for general support, finding out information and getting involved in things and can put you in touch with other students in your state. Please contact the Student Union. I have lost part of my unit material, can I get a replacement?
Yes, contact your unit advisor or the Student Support Unit on 1800 332 569 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it If its only a partial replacement of the material they may be able to fax this to you quite quickly. How do I apply for a deferred examination?
You must apply for Special Consideration and specify that you are requesting a deferred examination. An application for special consideration is available online at  http://www.monash.edu.au/exams/special-consideration.html . Special consideration only applies if your work has been affected by illness or other serious cause. Deferred examinations are generally granted for reasons such as illness during or shortly before the time of the exam, an unexpected trip for work etc. A response to your application may not be made or received by you before the exam. You can contact the faculty to for further information but if a decision isn’t made, you’ll have to hope your application is successful. Can I change between internal and off campus units?
It is possible to swap from internal to off campus mode and to combine units being studied via different modes. This is what flexible learning is all about. Check that the units you are interested in are offered via internal or off campus mode in the handbook www.monash.edu.au/pubs/handbooks . Remember that the amenities fee you pay differs for internal and off campus students. When do I find out what textbooks are required for units?
When you receive your unit material in January or February. All students should have received their material by the start of semester. If you have not you can contact the Student Support Unit on 1800 332 569 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or contact the Student Union on 1800 816 620. If you want to find out in advance what the text requirements will be you can ask the unit co-ordinator by contacting the faculty. Don’t call too early they might not have selected the text yet but from about December on this should be set. Can I get a MUGSU student diary?
MUGSU diaries and wallplanners are available for a small fee. The cost of a diary is $3 and a wallplanner $2. Contact the MUGSU on 1800 816 620 to have a diary or wallplanner sent to you. When do I sit a supplementary or deferred exam?
19 – 23 January. You will receive formal notification from your faculty of the date and arrangements for you to sit the deferred or supplementary exam. Contact your faculty if you have not received this information ahead of time. What happens if I don’t receive my study material on time?
Due to the vagaries of the postal system and occasional ineptitude some students may not receive their study material by the start of semester. You are welcome to contact the Student Support Unit on 1800 332 569 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to check on the status of material if this is the case. They have a database where receipt and despatch of all material for off campus students is recorded and can tell you when packages of unit material were sent to you. If you have waited for some time before receiving the material and think this will affect your ability to study the subject effectively you may ask for assignment extension/s. Contact your unit advisor to discuss this. Significant extensions on early assignments may limit the time you can spend on later assignments though be careful when considering requests for long extensions. Contact the Student Union if you are denied an extension on 1800 816 620
