What are the Monash Games?

The Monash Games is an opportunity for staff and students across all Victorian campuses of the university to play sports in a fun and friendly environment over two days. The emphasis is on getting involved and ‘having a go’. All skill levels are encouraged to take part from beginners to advanced. Monash Games is a great chance to represent the Gippsland campus, meet new people and be involved in university life. If you are interested in participating, you can register through MUGSU Sport and Rec.

A hugely successful Monash Games was held on July 10 and 11 with over 40 teams competing in six sports over the two days. The sports played were basketball, soccer, mixed netball, volleyball, cricket and dodgeball.

The Monash Games is an event that promotes healthy inter-department and cross campus rivalry amongst the Monash University Community. An indication of the cross campus feel to the games was the 6 a side soccer semi finals with teams representing Peninsula, Gippsland, Caulfield and Clayton playing off for a spot in the Grand Final.

The Gippsland Campus was well represented at the Monash Games with 65 participants joining in the fun, and fielding at least one team in every sport. The Gippsland team also included a basketball team of year 11 and 12 students from Kurnai College, accompanied by Mr Nick Schilling, who selflessly cut his holidays short to allow the Kurnai team to participate in the 2008 Monash Games.

Sport and Rec Director Mr Shane Stevens said “the games are a great event for staff, students and friends to interact, improve our health, create new friendships and strengthen existing friendships”. More widely known as “Shane’O”, the Sport and Rec Director formed one of the two volleyball teams from the Gippsland Campus.

The Monash Games is a unique event that involves a range of people from those who have never participated in organised sport, through to elite athletes. There is no team selection or entry requirements, so the event is simply clean, healthy fun for all, regardless of fitness or skill level.

The Gippsland team included Mr Vashon Weaver who is the captain of the Latrobe City Energy mens Basketball team. Mr Weaver is studying primary teaching at Monash Gippsland and we are delighted to have him along with fellow Gippsland students Brett Harvey, Jordan Canovan and Calvin Rees all representing Monash University in basketball during 2008 at both the Monash Games and Australian University Games later in the year.

Another highlight was the support from Gippsland staff for the Monash Games. Thanks to all the staff members who played in soccer, volleyball, mixed netball and volleyball teams. Thanks also to Manzur Murshed and the School of IT for sponsoring the team of post-graduate internationals who formed a cricket team for the event.

The team from Monash Sport hosted a great event that looks certain to grow into a hallmark event on the Monash University calendar. Feedback from participants has been good and there is already talk and excitement for the 2009 Monash Games.

Gippsland staff who participated were Erik Eklund, Shyh Wei Teng, Wally Noppert (freakish soccer player), Mustafa Isreb and Lisa Neocleus.
